The Honour Roll Clasp of the Army

(Ehrenblattspange des Heeres und der Waffen-SS)

After the invasion of the Soviet Union, Adolf Hitler instituted the "Honour Roll of the German Army" (Ehrenblatt der Deutschen Heeres und der Waffen-SS) , which was to record honourable and heroic deeds performed by members of these branches of the German military. 

On the 1st January 1944, Hitler introduced the "Honour Roll Clasp of the German Army and Waffen SS".

Award Criteria

The award criteria for the Army Honor Clasp did not differ from the Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine clasp, namely to perform an act of bravery above and beyond the call of duty, but one which did not merit recommendation for the Knights Cross or German Cross.

Its bestowing was at the discretion of the German High Command. It was, however, awarded very sparingly, and so did retain a high level of prestige and honour.

The process of awarding the Honour Roll Clasp of the Army

1. Naming of recipient in the Honour Roll of the German Army (Nennung im Ehrenblatt des deutschen Heeres - this is the date in the list).

2. Awarding of the Honour Roll Clasp of the Army (Verleihung der Ehrenblattspange des Heeres).

3. Receiving by recipient of the Honour Roll Clasp of the Army (Überreichung der Ehrenblattspange des Heeres).

The Waffen SS were not nominally part of the German Army, but were nevertheless eligible on the same conditions as the Army

Method of Wear

The clasp was attached to a length of the ribbon for the Iron Cross 2nd Class in a, presentation case, so that the recipient had the option of replacing his Iron Cross ribbon or attaching the clasp to the existing ribbon.

The clasp to be worn on the second buttonhole of the tunic, on the ribbon of the Iron Cross 2nd Class. 

If the recipient held the 1939 Iron Cross Bar to the 1914 Iron Cross 2nd Class , only the Honour Roll Clasp was to be worn
